In February 2023, the Utah state legislature passed SB 62 which establishes a state hydrogen advisory council to be led by the Utah Office of Energy Development. The council will be made up of seven to nine members appointed by the State Energy Office director with expertise in (1) hydrogen energy in general (2) hydrogen project facilities (3) technology suppliers (4) hydrogen producers or processors (5) renewable and fossil-based power generation industries (6) fossil fuel-based hydrogen feedstock providers. Some of the responsibilities of the council include working with neighboring states who have existing hydrogen programs; engaging with key stakeholders including the private sector and environmental groups; making recommendations on establishing statewide safety protocols, supportive legislation, and the development of multiple feedstocks in the state.
